Our involvement
Open source development promotes not only innovation but also accelerates progress in software development.
Developing non-differentiating software within communities is not a new idea in the automotive industry. Efforts such as AUTOSAR are successful examples of how joint development on non-differentiating functionality can free resources needed to develop the functionality that matters most to our customers.
In the same way, open source software embodies the same concept, where communities maintain a piece of software, and provide it to participants under special open source software licenses. A high number of participants with different technical backgrounds and domains ensure that the software delivered is of high functional value and has been tested in a range of different contexts.
To BMW Car IT GmbH, the active engagement in open source communities is the logical continuation of this approach. On this page you will find information about selected open source projects at BMW Car IT.
